Just like with other forms of cancer, early detection can make a significant difference in treatment success. Regular screenings are one of the best defenses against oral cancer, and our team is here to provide thorough, attentive care.

During your screening, our dentist will carefully examine your lips, tongue, gums, mouth, and throat for any unusual changes that may indicate early signs of cancer. We also take time to discuss any symptoms you may have noticed. If you’ve had persistent issues for more than a week—such as ear pain, unexplained mouth bleeding, sores that won’t heal, white or red patches, sudden weight loss, lumps or swelling, a sore throat without sinus symptoms, difficulty swallowing, or changes in speech—schedule an appointment right away.

Unfortunately, oral cancer claims one life every hour in the United States. While anyone can develop it, certain factors increase the risk, including family history, prolonged sun exposure, poor diet, alcohol use, and tobacco use in any form. Oral cancer is more common in men, and patients with GERD also face higher risks.

Treatment success depends largely on early detection. When discovered in its earliest stages, oral cancers have an 80–90% survival rate and are often easier to treat with less invasive procedures. Later-stage cancers are typically more complex and harder to manage.
